ROOF MAINTENANCE
Cedar Roof Maintenance More...
At JDWoodRevival we believe there is much you can do for your cedar roof before you need to replace it. We specialize in treatments and provide services to maintain, repair and preserve your investment.
Your Roof and the Elements More...
How quickly can a roof deteriorate? Cedar does have natural abilities (oils, etc) to protect from weather and rot, but as it ages it loses its strength to resist this natural process. Through the seasons, your cedar roof will slowly deteriorate under constant exposure to the elements of sun, snow, wind and rain. Overhanging trees and north slope shade can create problem areas on your roof. Moss, debris (leaves and seeds), and algae can shorten the life of wood considerably. Prolonged high moisture content will encourage rot, mould growth and even carpenter ant colonies. Proper ventilation is also important for the condition of the roof (and the attic/insulation).
Maintenance Solutions More...
We provide a number of maintenance solutions to counter the damaging effects of moss, algae and sun exposure. A clean and well-preserved cedar roof can last 30 to 40 (or more) years (depending on slope, thickness of cedar and installation method) and will certainly enhance the resale value of your home.
Cleaning More...
One of the main ways to preserve your investment is to keep your roof clean. Power washing is the main method we use to clean the moss and algae off of cedar roofs. This process thoroughly removes moss, algae, dirt, and other rotting debris from all visible sides of the shingles. After the power washing is completed the eaves troughs, siding, windows and walkways are rinsed clean of the dirt and overspray from the roof.
Repairs vs. Replacing More...
Minor repairs usually are taken care of after the cleaning process. Sometimes sections may need replacing if left too long without proper attention. Badly damaged shingles and ridges are replaced and nailed in place again. Caulking and flashing is checked over and reapplied if necessary.
If need be, we can replace sections of roof that are beyond repair, and blend it in as much as possible to the remainder of the roof.
Preservative Application More...
Applying preservative is a great way to extend the life of your roof, giving it a boost to fight the effects of weather, sun, and erosion. Penetrating oil applications provide UV protection, control moisture and also limit the growth of algae and moss. It also keeps the roof looking clean and consistent in color. The products we use are Rooftec™ Oil Preservative and Rooftec Csp (synthetic preservative) made by Sansin. (www.sansin.com) These products can be re-applied every 4 to 5 years. When the roof is newer it may not need to have the extra protection as often, but as it ages and loses its natural oils it will need the preservatives to help against brittleness and slowing down the aging process.
Zinc Strip Installation More...
This is another deterrent for algae and moss growth. The zinc strips are installed along the roof ridges. On their own these strips will not get rid of a heavy build up of moss or algae, but they can certainly help keep away the algae once the roof has been cleaned. We like to use this method along with the preservatives to combine their efforts on shady areas of roofs.
Other Repairs: Skylights, Vents and Chimney Saddles More...
- Skylights that are old, poorly made or improperly installed may need repair, resealing or replacement.
- Ventilation systems that are inadequate may need upgrading such as: more vents installed, or better intake (soffit vents), or a power vent may be needed to increase air movement through small attic spaces that heat up quickly. Good ventilation decreases moisture and increases longevity in roofs in general. It also lowers your energy costs in both summer and winter seasons.
- Slopes above or behind chimneys may need new or bigger saddles installed for better water diversion. Valleys, where several slopes join together, may need rubberized membranes underneath for better ice'n'water protection. Slopes that are too gradual should have proper membrane installed beneath to handle the added snow and leak potential.
- Heating cord installation: Complex roof designs may need extra attention to fix problematic areas (around valleys, dormers and overhangs) that are prone to leaking from winter ice damming. Ice melting cords can be installed to minimize these winter issues.
